How Tea Helps Keep Your Mouth Hydrated
Posted on 2/20/2023 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
We live in a world of caffeine and sugar, both of which help to contribute to dry mouth. What's more, is that teas and sports drinks claim to hydrate as well as water, which further confuses the information available about the causes of dry mouth. In reality, tea can help keep your mouth moist and comfortable, but not all teas have this quality.
What Teas can Help My Dry Mouth?
First and foremost, the tea and dry mouth issue is the caffeine and sugar in the tea. The sugar can cause you discomfort long-term, while the caffeine can contribute to dry mouth. But that doesn't mean that you need to stop drinking tea or coffee entirely. In fact, there are a few teas that aid in helping fight dry mouth. If you try either of these teas, remember to use less sugar in them, and always choose decaf when you have the option.
Green tea is one of the best options for this. If you are a tea drinker, chances are, you already know the health benefits to drinking green tea, including helping with heart issues and diabetes. But it also aids in the oral region because it seems to lower the acidity of saliva, which contributes to dry mouth symptoms.
Chamomile tea is the other good option for combating dry mouth. Along with its known qualities of assisting in relaxation, chamomile is one of the teas which trigger increased saliva production. This is the reverse outcome of drinking a cup of caffeinated coffee. By activating saliva production, we relieve the dry mouth symptom almost entirely.
