Do Teeth Need Fluoride

Posted on 3/20/2023 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
Do Teeth Need FluorideMinerals are essential for good health because they help the body in many ways. They play a big role in various body functions. Production of enzymes, muscle contractions, immunity system, energy levels, strong teeth, and healthy bones are some of the responsibilities of minerals in the human body. Most parts of your body may not function well without them, leading to poor health.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is the mineral responsible for strong teeth, it plays a crucial role in the healthy growth, development, and well-being of teeth. It naturally occurs in rocks, soil, and water. Some amounts of fluoride are found in some foods since they obtain it from the soil.

Grapes are a good example of foods rich in fluoride content. Water naturally contains fluoride but, in some instances, it is added to tap water. Fluoride is also added to most kinds of toothpaste. Therefore, it is an important mineral considered in teeth health due to various reasons.

Protects the Enamel

The outer layer of teeth called enamel is protected by fluoride. This mineral resists acids that cause harm to your enamel. Cavity-causing bacteria build-up is prevented by the presence of the mineral because it fights the actions of such bacteria.

Reduces Tooth Decay

Decay is not what you want to have. The presence of fluoride in the mineral structure of your teeth is the solution to its prevention as it can even reverse forming cavities. This is facilitated by its easy absorption into the teeth and bones.

Restores Lost Minerals

Where the teeth are already damaged due to lack of minerals, it restores them by fighting acids that destroy them. It creates good conditions for mineral development in both teeth and bones. It also helps reduce teeth sensitivity, especially when used in toothpaste. For more information on the benefits of fluoride visit us.
