How to Ensure Healthy Teeth and Gums for Your Child

How to Ensure Healthy Teeth and Gums for Your ChildHaving a good oral routine when young is vital in ensuring a healthy smile in adulthood. The responsibility of taking care of the baby's teeth falls on the caregivers and parents since kids can't follow the best oral practices. One way to keep your kid's gums and teeth healthy is by brushing and scheduling dental cleaning. However, there is more you can do to maintain good oral health. Here are more tips to keep your baby's gums and teeth healthy.

Encourage your kid to drink plenty of water

Drinking plenty of water can improve your baby's oral health. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria likely to build up and form plaque. It also helps to lower the mouth PH level after consuming acidic items. The acid in the mouth can damage the enamel, resulting in cavities.

Do you know that water also helps in the production of saliva? Enough saliva in the mouth acts as the first line of defense against gum disease and tooth decay. Since water contains no sugar, your baby may not drink enough. In this case, you can put fruits such as strawberries to add flavor.

Give your kids a healthy diet

A healthy diet should do more good than harm to your kid's teeth and gums. For instance, sugary foods and beverages are the primary sources of bacteria in the mouth. In this case, lowering the intake of sugar is vital. Also, consider giving your kid foods rich in calcium, proteins, and vitamin C to ensure strong and healthy gums and teeth.

Consider dental sealants

Dental sealants are a good way to prevent plaque buildup in the back molars. The back molars have deep grooves. Thus, they are susceptible to cavities since plaque will likely build up in that area. When dental sealants are applied to the back molars, they act as a barrier between harmful bacteria and the surface of the baby's teeth. Do you want to maintain a healthy smile for your kid?
