Can Smoking Lead to Receding Gums
Posted on 8/7/2023 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
According to the Dental Association of America, three out of four adults suffer from receding gums. That being said, there are many reasons your gums could recede such as high sugar intake, and buildup of plaque on the teeth because of poor oral health. However, one of the major causes of receding gums and most gum diseases is the smoking of tobacco and tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, and cigars.
Overall, smoking puts you at a higher risk of gum problems and even tooth loss. Apart from receding gums, people who smoke are also susceptible to various diseases such as infections in the mouth, which takes a long time to heal, and oral cancer.
Can Smoking Lead to Receding Gums?
Habitual smoking does lead to receding gums. As a matter of fact, smoking is also one of the leading causes of other gum diseases such as bleeding gums and bad breath. According to the Oral Health Foundation, people who smoke produce more bacteria and plaque. This puts people who smoke at a higher risk of receding gums and other oral health problems. Thus, it is best to avoid smoking to maintain good oral health.
How Does Smoking Cause Receding Gums?
If you do not maintain proper oral hygiene, plaque will build up on the teeth and gums. Once this plaque comes into contact with food residue, it will cause an infection. If this infection is untreated, it leads to gum diseases such as receding gums. Normally, the body usually fights these infections in the body on its own. However, for people who smoke, the body cannot fight off any infections, since smoking slows down the immune system. Thus, the body won't be able to fight bacterial infections.
If you want to avoid oral health diseases, it is up to you to take preventive measures to ensure that you have strong and healthy teeth. Start by coming up with a daily oral hygiene regimen that you can follow. Avoid habits such as smoking that can be detrimental to your oral health. If you suspect you may have receding gums, it is best to consult with your dentist who can diagnose you and offer a treatment plan.
