How Can Good Dental Hygiene Help Me?

Woman smiling after dental cleaning and exam at Thomas Plunkett, DMD in Lakeland, FLGood dental hygiene is critical for maintaining oral health, but you may not understand why brushing and flossing are so important. The better your dental hygiene is, the more likely you are to have amazing dental health. Here are some reasons why having good dental hygiene is so important.

What Does Good Dental Hygiene Look Like?

To have great dental hygiene, you need to do three things. First, you will need to thoroughly brush your teeth using a soft toothbrush at least twice daily. You could brush your teeth after meals or snacks if you want. Second, be sure that you are flossing in between your teeth at least twice a day. Again, some people prefer to floss their teeth each time they eat. The other important aspect of dental hygiene is to make sure our dentist checks your teeth twice a year to make sure you do not have any problems. If you follow these steps, it is easier to have good oral hygiene.

What Are the Benefits of Good Dental Hygiene?

Good dental hygiene has many benefits. One of the most important is that your teeth will be stronger throughout your life. While our dentist can repair a cavity through dental fillings, your tooth is never as strong as it was when it was cavity-free. Once your tooth has a cavity, it is more prone to additional cavities, and there is a chance that the weakened tooth will crack or break.

Great dental hygiene also lowers the risk of gum disease, which is an infection of the gums. The infection can even spread into other areas of your body, increasing its inflammatory response. Research demonstrates that inflammation throughout your body can lead to issues with your heart and increase your risk for dementia. The better you care for your teeth and gums, the better the results are for your entire body.
