Can I Clean My Teeth Without Toothpaste?
Posted on 8/1/2024 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
Toothpaste in its current form has only been around since the 1950s. Before the advent of toothpaste in a tube, people brushed their teeth with a variety of different products. Now, many adults want to keep their teeth cleaning as natural as possible for themselves and their families. If you want to clean your teeth without using toothpaste, we have some suggestions.
A Special Note for Babies, Toddlers, and Children
Before we can discuss tooth cleaning without toothpaste, we need to caution you about using toothpaste alternatives with children. First, if you have a baby who does not have teeth, you do not need to use toothpaste at all. Instead, you can wipe their gums clean after each feeding with a wet washcloth. Once your baby gets teeth, you can begin to brush those teeth with baby-safe toothpaste.
For toddlers and young children, you may want to look for a child-safe toothpaste. Natural alternatives to toothpaste may not keep their growing teeth as healthy as possible. If you want your children to use only natural toothpaste, there are some available that can clean their teeth and keep them healthy.
Natural Alternatives to Toothpaste
One of the easiest natural alternatives to toothpaste for older children and adults is a mixture of baking soda and salt that you brush on your teeth. Both of these additives can clean your teeth efficiently and even work to whiten them.
Also, many adults brush their teeth with bentonite clay or activated charcoal because both of these agents help fight tooth decay and get rid of plaque. Another material that would fit in this category is an herbal tooth powder, which usually contains peppermint, goldenseal, and clove buds. If you do not like the idea of tooth powder, you may want to try coconut oil because it contains antibacterial agents to fight periodontal disease and tooth decay.
