Can I Use Toothpicks to Clean My Teeth and Gums?

You may be running errands all day or enjoying some relaxation time camping with your family, and you are nowhere near your toothpaste or toothbrush. If that happens and you worry about your dental hygiene, you may be tempted to reach for a toothpick. Here are some reasons why that is a bad idea for your dental health.

The Problem With Toothpicks

Toothpicks are usually made of wood, but they have been made from other materials, such as plastic, metal, and even precious metals such as gold. No matter what material they are made from, toothpicks are sharp on both ends. It is the sharpness that can cause trouble for your teeth and your gums.

While people can use toothpicks effectively to remove plaque and food particles from their teeth, toothpicks can tear into your gum tissue. They can also make scrapes on your tooth enamel, especially if the toothpicks are made of metal. Cutting into your teeth and gums leaves them open to cracking and infections.

What Should I Use Instead?

If you have trapped food particles between your teeth, or you need to brush your teeth, why not carry a portable toothbrush and toothpaste in your car or purse? You can also opt to put flossers in a bag as well. If you worry about flossers not being biodegradable, you can opt for coconut floss or biodegradable flossers. There are also portable tiny toothbrushes with built in tooth cleaners you may want to try as well.

If you are worried you may have damaged your teeth or gums through your toothpick use, we can help. Why not reach out to us today to make an appointment? That way, we can take a look at your mouth, check your teeth and gums, and offer you suggestions for healing your dental issues. When you are ready to have us clean and check your teeth, be sure to give us a call so we can make an appointment for you.
