Brushing in a Straight Line is No Longer Recommended

Posted on 9/2/2024 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
Woman smiling while brushing her teeth after appointment atThomas Plunkett, DMD in Lakeland, FLFor decades, dentists recommended brushing your teeth in a back-and-forth motion. However, recent research suggests that this method may not be the most effective way to remove plaque and prevent cavities.

Why the Change?

The American Dental Association (ADA) now recommends using a modified Bass technique for brushing. This technique involves:

•  Angling the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line.
•  Gently vibrating the brush back and forth with short strokes.
•  Focusing on each tooth individually, making sure to clean all surfaces.

This technique is more effective at removing plaque and bacteria from the gum line, which is where cavities often start. It is also gentler on the gums and teeth, which can help prevent gum recession and tooth erosion.

Other Important Oral Care Tips

In addition to using the modified Bass technique, here are some other important oral care tips:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
•  Use fluoride toothpaste.
•  Floss once a day.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Restoration Dentistry: When Brushing Isn't Enough

Even with proper brushing and flossing, some people may still develop cavities or other dental problems. In these cases, restoration dentistry can help restore the health and function of your teeth.

Restoration dentistry includes procedures such as fillings, crowns, bridges, and implants. These procedures can help to:

•  Repair damaged teeth
•  Replace missing teeth
•  Improve the appearance of your smile

Conclusion

Brushing your teeth in a straight line is no longer recommended. The ADA now recommends using the modified Bass technique for brushing. This technique is more effective at removing plaque and bacteria from the gum line, which can help prevent cavities and other dental problems.

By following the tips above, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy for years to come. However, if you do experience any dental problems, be sure to see your dentist for treatment.
