Carbohydrates, or carbs, are an essential part of a healthy diet. They provide our bodies with energy and fiber. However, eating too many carbs, especially refined carbs like white bread, pasta, and sugary drinks, can be bad for your oral health.
How Carbs Affect Your Teeth
When you eat carbs, the bacteria in your mouth break them down into sugars. These sugars can then stick to your teeth and form plaque, a sticky film that can cause cavities and gum disease.
Plaque is constantly forming on your teeth, but it can be removed by brushing and flossing regularly. However, if plaque is not removed, it can harden into calculus, also known as tartar. Calculus is much more difficult to remove than plaque and can only be removed by a dental professional.
