Is Bonding Permanent?
Posted on 1/24/2022 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
Your oral health is extremely important, especially if you are looking to maintain a bright and beautiful smile. One of the most efficient ways to do this, aside from brushing and flossing daily, is through the process of teeth bonding, which many people don't know exists or how it works. Teeth- bonding is similar to orthodontics in that it can straighten your teeth, but it's significantly less invasive and also less expensive.
Types of dental bonding.
There are two types of dental bonding. One involves putting a composite resin material onto existing teeth to repair a chip or crack in an enamel surface. This is not considered permanent because it only requires filing off part of a tooth enamel layer and then applying resins to smooth out defects. Another type of dental bonding can be used to change tooth color or shape after whitening treatments. In fact, you may have experienced what many people call a touch-up following whitening treatment.
How long does it take to heal?
Bonded veneers require at least three to four weeks healing. How long they take depends on a number of factors including: size of your teeth and gums, color and porosity of your enamel and any other restorations already in place.
What are the potential risks of teeth bonding?
Bonding can be a great option if you're looking to repair damaged teeth or fix slightly crooked teeth. However, there are some potential risks involved in bonding that you should discuss with our dentist beforehand. For example, bonding may cause sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures if not done properly. It can also result in cracked teeth as well as a weakening of tooth enamel because of exposure to high heat. In most cases these risks are manageable but something to keep in mind before undergoing treatment.
