What Is The Difference Between NHS And a Private Dental Care?

Posted on 1/10/2022 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
What Is The Difference Between NHS And a Private Dental Care? The United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) offers free dental care to British citizens in the country, while people planning to move abroad have to choose between private dentistry and the national system. If you're considering private dental care abroad or are interested in learning more about the differences between NHS and private dentistry, here's what you need to know about each option and how they differ from one another.

NHS dentist vs. private dentist.

The National Health Service (NHS) provides free dental care for those who are registered with a dentist in their area. Patients can see any NHS dentist, so long as they have a valid NHS number. But what is private dental care, how does it differ from NHS dental care, and should you consider going private? In addition to regular check-ups, in private dental care one will need to pay some money directly.

NHS dentistry advantages over private dentistry.

When you compare NHS dentistry with private dental care, you'll see that there are many advantages to using NHS services. When it comes to oral health, there is no real debate as to which service is best: The National Health Service. Doctors in England are bound by contracts that require them to provide their patients with a level of care they cannot hope to offer privately; they have no choice but to adhere to these rules.

NHS dentistry disadvantages over private dentistry.

As an NHS dental patient, you may not have a choice of dentist, which can mean your local NHS dentist may not offer all aspects of private dentistry. As a private dental patient you can choose to go to any dentist (including orthodontists) or hygienist you like.

Which one to go for?

If you can't afford private dental care, then NHS is your best bet. However, if you do want to switch to private dental care then there are certain criteria that you need to meet. You will get a maximum of two checkups per year from an NHS dentist (which in reality is one every six months). If you would like more frequent checkups then you will have to pay for them yourself, or use a private dentist.
