Should You Wear a Nightguard?
Posted on 5/23/2022 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
If you clench and grind your teeth when sleeping, the dentist will most likely recommend a nightguard. This is a device that is meant to cover your teeth to prevent them from coming into contact. There are three types of nightguard depending on the material used to make them. These are hard nightguards, over the counter and custom made.
Importance Of a Nightguard
Prevents teeth damage. Teeth grinding wears out your enamel and this can lead to tooth sensitivity. A thin enamel is prone to tooth decay which if not treated goes deep into the tooth causing infection. Cracks and fractures are also results of grinding and can be painful and expensive to treat.
Prevents TMJ disorder. Clenching can apply too much pressure on this joint which leads to misalignment and eventually TMJ dysfunction. Prevents headaches that result from tensed muscles due to pressure applied when grinding teeth.
How to Take Care Of a Nightguard
If you do not properly take care of it, it might collect harmful bacteria that affect your oral health. Here are things you can do to take care of your nightguard.
Rinse it when you wake up to make it lose any substances that might be stuck on it then brush gently using a toothbrush with no toothpaste. A brush and water is enough to clean because some toothpastes may wear out your nightguard.
Place it on a clean surface to dry before storing it. Storing a wet nightguard will create a breeding ground for bad bacteria. Ensure you clean the storage case too. It is also recommended that you carry your nightguard to your dental visits so that the dentist can check if it is still in perfect condition for use.
