How Teeth Are Prepared for Getting Braces

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Thomas Plunkett DMD
How Teeth Are Prepared for Getting BracesBraces are reliable dental appliances used to straighten and align teeth. Braces are effective because they help transform your smile significantly. They also help get rid of any misalignment and overlapping that might distort your smile. The process of getting dental braces requires adequate preparation. Your teeth must be ready for braces before the process starts. Several things are done to make that possible.

Be Ready for Some Discomfort and Adjustment

It is common to experience some discomfort as your teeth and gums adjust to new braces. This is likely because your mouth is not used to the pressure caused by braces. As your teeth gradually adjust, gums might become tender and sore. Luckily, you can control this discomfort by taking approved painkillers. For that reason, we advise that you have such medications at hand especially during the first few weeks of wearing braces. As your mouth adjusts to braces, the pain and discomfort will reduce rapidly.

Clean Your Mouth

Another way of preparing your teeth for braces is cleaning your mouth. Before you come in for the process, you should clean your mouth through brushing and flossing. This is vital because it gets rid of all the harmful bacteria and food particles. It is not healthy to have braces on top of uncleaned teeth and gums! Therefore, you should strive to clean your teeth and mouth altogether.

Avoid Certain Foods

After getting your dental braces, you should avoid various foods that could negatively impacts them. For instance, avoid biting into hard foods because they increase the chances of chipping. While braces are tough enough, they could break when exposed to excessive pressure. This will result in several setbacks that will see you need new braces. You should also avoid sugary foods at all costs. Contact us for more information on how to handle dental braces.
