Woman holding clear aligner in front of mouthMore and more people in today’s society are paying attention to the appearance of their teeth. This has led to an increase in patient visitation, as well as an uptick in cosmetic dentistry procedures. This could be anything from a whitening treatment to veneers. However, for patients whose issues have to do with misaligned or out of position teeth, for years their only option was awkward and unsightly metal braces.

The embarrassment or inconvenience of having to wear those devices, along with the excessive maintenance and dentist trips that they require made a lot of people choose to simply live with their imperfect smile. But now, highly effective alternative teeth straightening methods have been developed. One of the best examples of this is Invisalign. Here at Thomas Plunkett, DMD, our dental practitioners are constantly helping patients with these same issues.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a convenient and comfortable teeth straightening system which uses clear, removable trays to gently and incrementally realign them. These trays are custom fitted specifically for your mouth based off of a number of high tech molding techniques. They are meant to be worn throughout the day and night but are comfortable enough that it becomes something that you no longer think about after a short period.

As your teeth begin to align, new trays which are slightly adjusted to continue to realign them further will be introduced. And unlike braces, you don’t have to make multiple trips to the dentist for maintenance and adjustments. You only need to check in periodically so that your results can be tracked.

What Should You Expect During the Process?

The initial consultation is when you and the dentist will discuss your desire to straighten your teeth, and whether or not Invisalign is the right option for you. The doctor may perform an informal exam to get an idea of what kind of treatment would be best suited for you.

If Invisalign is a viable option, then the molding process begins next. This can be done on the same day, or an appointment can be made for an upcoming date. This appointment can consist of x-rays, digital scans, photographs, technology, and imaging to create the perfect model of your teeth for your customized Invisalign trays.

How Can You Find Out If it Would Be Right for You?

The only way to be sure what your best options are for straightening your teeth is to sit down with one of our dental health practitioners and discuss it with them. They can help you decide if Invisalign is a good choice for your treatment method or if there is another option which might be better suited to your situation. If it turns out that you are a good candidate for this type of therapy, you will be able to begin the process as soon as you are ready.
