Kid wearing football gear and holding sports mouthguardOne of the most common causes of dental trauma among people is due to an accident or an injury while playing sports or engaging in some other form of physical activity. Most sports involve fast paced action and various equipment flying around at any given time. While these activities can be both fun and a great source of exercise, they also present certain risks.

Dental mouthguards designed especially to prevent this kind of dental health situation are becoming quite common in both youth and adult sports. Here at Thomas Plunkett, DMD, our oral health professionals will be more than glad to find the right device for your needs.

Difference Between Nighttime and Activity Mouthguards

It is important to understand that not all mouthguards serve the same purposes, so using one that is meant for a specific application (other than sports) will not serve the function required of it. For example, some mouthguards are meant for nighttime use to reduce teeth grinding or to help keep airways open for people who suffer from sleep apnea.

These devices would not be effective in protecting your mouth from the knee or elbow of another participant or from being hit by a piece of equipment.

Various Types of Sports-Related Dental Appliances

It is also important to note that the ADA recommends mouthguards for any sport in which contact or combat is involved. This includes such examples as baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, martial arts, wrestling, boxing, rugby and several others.

There are three basic types of mouthguards for sports, but only one of them is individualized from a dentist. Stock mouthguards are available at most sporting goods stores and are the least protective. Secondly, boil and bite mouthguards are also available to the general public and although they may fit better than stock, they still do not live up to the standards of protection recommended by dental and athletic professionals alike. Custom-made pieces from one of our dental health specialists are much more effective.

Benefits of Sports Mouthguards

There are numerous reasons to use a mouthguard whenever playing sports or being involved in a physical activity which risks facial injury or trauma. These appliances keep not only your teeth safe, but also your gums and tongue as well. Even if an accident does not knock out any teeth, it can still cause serious lacerations to the gums and in extreme situations, it can cause a person to severely bite down on their tongue to the point of nerve damage.

As far as how long you should use the same mouthguard, most experts recommend having them replaced at the beginning of each season.

Mouthguards can have a huge impact on the health and function of your teeth when you or your child are involved in physical or combat sports. Considering the fact that dental issues which arise from accidents on the playing field are so easily preventable, it only makes sense to give us a call here at Thomas Plunkett, DMD to learn more.
